Warpower:Ukraine

The WARPOWER series of sites take a unique, 'by-the-numbers', quick-reference approach to the current (2023) military capabilities of Ukraine. Ukraine has been embroiled in a battle for its survival since the February 2022 invasion by neighboring Russia - a Top 3 global defense powerhouse. The country has forged a tremendous response, buoyed by financial and material support from the West led by the United States, as it seeks to thwart the advance of the Russian War Machine.

Service Branches

The fighting forces of Ukraine are collectively managed under the Armed Forces of Ukraine banner and encompasses six major branches of service: the Ukrainian Air Force (UAF), the Ukrainian Ground Forces (UGF), the Ukrainian Navy (UN), the Ukrainian Air Assault Forces (UAAF), the Special Operations Forces (SOF), and the Territorial Defense Forces (TDF). The Navy service also supports the Ukrainian Naval Infantry (UNI). The defense force was founded on March 29th, 1917. As Ukraine remains in an active war against Russia, numbers presented on this site may be estimated values to account for battlefield losses, donations from NATO members and the West, or captures from retreating Russian forces.

By Western standards, the Ukrainian Air Force is a modest fighting force made up largely of Soviet-era flying equipment that includes the Su-27 and MiG-29 fighters. Once the spearhead of the Soviet air fleet, these aircraft have limited value over the modern battlefield today. In properly-trained / determined hands, however, they still represent a formidable adversary partilcularly where air superiority has not yet been achieved. The earlier, post-Soviet Ukrainian Air Force inventory proved more prolific with MiG-21, MiG-23/-27, and MiG-25 types available as well as the Tupolev Tu-95 and Tu-160 strategic-level bombers - all since retired before the start of the Russo-Ukrainian War in 2022.
NOTES: The Ukrainian Air Force is on track to receive training, spares, and complete Lockheed F-16 Fighting Falcon lightweight multirole fighters from the United States and Allies.

Prior to the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, Ukrainian Land Force strength was centered primarily on older Soviet equipment. With support increasing from the West, the inventory has ballooned to include a large collection of various vehicle types. This has also meant a challenge to training, logistics, spares, and maintenance. Despite this, ground forces continue to do their best against a numerically superior and determined foe.
NOTES: Despite suffering losses and setbacks, the Ukrainian Army has been resupplied with support from the West, resulting in a collection of vehicle types available to the force. This includes the American M1 Abrams MBT and Bradley IFV as well as German and Swedish SPAs and a myriad of light-class and support vehicles.

Ukrainian military manpower by-the-numbers.

The Ukrainian military is a sizeable one when compared to regional powers. With a population of about 43.5 million citizens, about half make up the available pool and an estimated half-a-million personnel constitute the complete military establishment (not counting irregular and volunteer forces). Of this collection, the Army fields the largest quantity of fighting personnel numbering some 200,000 or so souls. Personal armaments are modern and also include homegrown battlefield solutions.
NOTES: Values below used (with permission) from the military stats aggregator site www.GlobalFirepower.com, detailing the current strengths and weaknesses of modern military forces by-the-numbers.

On paper, the Ukrainian Navy cannot compate directly with the Russian Navy's access to aircraft carriers, submarines, and guided-missile warships. As such, the service is left to attack the enemy through asymmetric warfare means that includes a large collection of donated fast, small-team craft. Some homegrown designs take up the mantle of special-mission types while only a single mine warfare vessel is present.
